Offering lower cost and accessible counselling is something I promised to myself when I entered this field. Too many people have trouble accessing the lifesaving mental health services that should be a part of our wrap around systems.

What kinds of things can ICBC and post- car accident counselling help with?

The damage isn't just to your body when you get hurt in an accident. The memory of the experience and the impact to your daily functioning and mood is a big part of recovery.
Concussion Support

Head injury is a common outcome in car accidents, and they can really affect your day-to-day life. Working with a counsellor can help you figure out how to manage the set backs, find accommodations, and honour your need for rest during this time.

Impact on existing mental health conditions

If you were going through something before the accident, injury might feel like a set back for the hard work you'd been doing. For example, if you were in eating disorder recovery and can no longer meal plan due to headaches and lack of concentration associated with concussion - that might feel like a relapse you never wanted to happen. Talking with a specialist about this can help you remember the 'you' that was in recovery, and set the path for growth.

Low Mood

After an accident, you might not be able to do all the things you used to. You might find yourself withdrawing from events because they feel more overwhelming, or you might physically be unable to do the little things - like going for a bike ride or giving your kid a piggyback. This can create and exacerbate feelings of sadness and depression. Let's figure out how to get you back to doing the things you love, even if they have to be modified right now.

Driving Anxiety

Whether you were a driver, a pedestrian, or a passenger in an accident, you probably feel differently about cars and the road now. It is common and totally reasonable to have developed some new fears. But these fears don't have to stop you from living your life.

Trauma Symptoms

After an accident, your memory might feel a bit fuzzy. our brains and bodies try to protect us in traumatic events. Sometimes the lasting effects can pop up, seemingly out of nowhere. If you notice you startle easily, are feeling jumpy, or are experiencing nightmares, it might mean that your nervous system hasn't quite processed what happened.

Disability

Moving through life with lower ability than you had before an accident can create a lot of grief, frustration, and sadness. Talking to someone about how to move through these feelings can help you feel like you're back at home in your body.
